| Cogne-Aosta (mentions of visit). In Aosta it is possible to visit some important Roman and medieval remains. The tour starts at the Roman Bridge, nearby the August Arch.This is a single arcade construction, built on the ancient Buthier's waterway. The August Arch, dating back to the year 25 b.C., is one of the most important remains of the Aosta's Roman past. From here, the St Anselmo street starts, a way dedicated to the famous philosopher. On the right, there is the St.Orso's Collegiate, a harmonious construction dating back to the year 1000 a.C., while the façade dates back to the year 1400. The Cloister and its 40 capitals make part of this religious construction. Going back to St Anselmo street, you reach Porta Prætoria, at the Roman town's entry. Briefly northwards there is the Roman Theatre, with a façade 22 m. high. The Amphitheatre's remains, partially occupied by the St.Joseph convent, is at the north-east corner of the boundary walls. At the end of Porta Prætoria street you reach the Emilio Chanoux square, dominated by the city hall's neoclassical façade. The Hôtel des États and Monseigneur de Sales streets lead to John XXIII place and to the Roman Forum, dating back to the X-XI cy. and restored several times. The temple has got two bell-towers, a Crypt and a Cloister quite important from the artistic point of view. The town of Aosta offers many other monuments of different periods, a historical museum and other permanent and temporary exhibitions.Notice: The way from Cogne to Aosta takes less than 1 hour.
